WHAT IS
needle felting?
Needle felting is the art of sculpting wool into shapes using a special needle with a barbed end. Being a fairly new craft, it is quickly increasing in popularity and continues to evolve. Felted works from around the world showcase many techniques and styles and range from just a few centimeters to several feet tall. You can create pose-able, interactive sculptures using wire armatures and easily combine your felted creations with other mediums such as clay, wax, fabrics, embellishments, and much more. The possibilities are endless when you combine the ability to sculpt free form with all the colors and textures found in wool and other felt-able fibers.
MEET THE
artist
After picking up my first felting kit in 2014, I remember tossing the instructions aside and diving right in. The kit was small with a flimsy piece of foam and the tiniest bit of wool. Wanting to test the waters and conserve the wool I had for the countless projects I had reeling in my mind, the result was a quarter-sized teddy bear. Since then, I have gone down the needle felt rabbit hole, exploring many fibers, felting tools, and techniques.
With the help of many reference photos, my needle-felted creations often start as scribbly sketches with a bunch of notes. I work out the details and structure, studying each animal's character, anatomy, and unique traits.
The most rewarding part of the creation is when I can see my sculptures start coming to life and catching a glimmer of something worthwhile after trudging through what some artists would call the “ugly phase.” (It’s me, I’m some artists.)
When I’m not needle felting, you can find me hiking through the woods and fields of PA, learning to identify the many native (and non-native) plants and insects, painting en plein air, and hanging out with my border collie, mini Australian shepherd and little black cat.
Inspiration has always been boundless between my love for nature, animals, and art. As with others who share these passions, they discover that needle felting is the perfect combination of the three. With the help of social media, I'm constantly in awe of the innovation of artists worldwide. A meditative craft focused on natural materials, it's easy to see why Needle Felting is becoming so popular! I'm delighted to share my art and favorite felting tools and supplies!
